TST Sturdy Stumps

from $300.00

Tree stumps have long been used by metalsmiths and jewelers as sturdy bases for heavy tools, such as anvils, vises and stakes, but let’s face it - a seasoned, level-cut chunk-o-log in the right height is hard to come by for most, and occupies a lot of space.

Enter, the Tiny Shiny Toolworks’ Sturdy Stump!

Available in three heights to ergonomically accommodate a range of bodies and processes, the Sturdy Stump is the perfect addition to any studio. This (relatively) lightweight, but solid work surface is ready for you to mount your vise(s), anvil(s) and stake holders, or use with any of your hand or machine tools. The 3 1/2” thick, laminated pine top won’t split or warp, and has plenty of room to add accessories, like our detachable Accessory Wings.

Sturdy Stumps include leveling casters, allowing them to work on almost any kind of flooring. Unlike most stumps, the lockable casters make it easy to roll ours out of the way when not in use, but make sure it stays put for working - perfect for maximizing small spaces.

Best of all, Sturdy Stumps pack flat, so shipping won’t break the bank! Requires simple & quick assembly using a single-tool (included).

Materials: Laminated Pine, Powder-Coated Steel, ABS Plastic

Weight Capacity for all Sturdy Stumps: 500lbs - not recommended for most blacksmithing

  • Short: 18”L x 12”W x 18”H - 28 lbs.
The lowest height we offer. We recommend this height for:

    • Most people to use with a ≈65lb anvil or stake-in-a-vise, working in a seated position

    • Processes that require overhead viewing

    • Folks for whom most standard stumps feel too high

  • Medium: 18”L x 12”W x 24”H- ≈31 lbs.
This is the most versatile stump height. We recommend this height for:

    • Most people to use with a ≈35lb anvil or bench block, working in a seated position

    • Chasing & Repoussé in a pitch bowl

    • Engraving in a ball vise

    • Stonesetting

    • Folks for whom most tools feel too high when working in a standing position

  • Tall: 18”L x 12”W x 30”H- ≈34 lbs.
This is standard desktop height. We recommend this height for:

    • Most people to use with a stake-in-a-vise or a 75lb+ anvil, working in a standing position

    • Folks for whom most tools feel too low when working in a seated position

Note: Our model in these photos (and TST Co-Founder) is Ajit, who is 5’11”, and the anvil is 35lbs., for scale.

Disclaimer: With proper installation, Sturdy Stumps are very stable. Please use common sense when installing tools in vises and stake holders to avoid causing a tipping hazard. Free consultation about safe installation is available upon request.

*TST also offers work benches and stumps in custom sizes and configurations, including feet that can be bolted down for ultimate stability. Contact us with your specifications for a quote!
